Q:  What should I do if a client does not pay?

A: Firstly, for your own protection, each job you do should have a written contract. With your contract, you should understand your expectations for payment dates.

Secondly, consider stipulating a payment upfront and another halfway through completion. If they do not pay, stop work in a polite, yet firm manner.

If your invoice has not been paid, follow up, contacting the client through all forms of communication. If they still do not pay, consider having a lawyer write a letter on your behalf.

And if they still do not pay, you can consider taking the case to small claims court. However, this may cost you more than the debt is worth.

In future, consider using an escrow service so that the funds are secure and accessible for both parties.

Q: How do I find great clients?

A: Most of the time, finding good clients will involve prospecting. Before contacting the clients that you want to work with, make sure you are armed with knowledge about their business.

Try and find out who the decision makers are, as well as their terms and how they accept new freelancers. Some clients will have stipulations, such as specific qualifications or insurance cover.

Don’t forget to send them some of your best work to impress and convince them that you are the best candidate for the job.

A: While working from home, and for yourself, has many benefits, it can feel lonely at times. You can help to overcome the stress and isolation of working alone by having a robust schedule and sticking to it.

Remember to focus your agenda on your most productive and creative time. Make sure there is time to have regular breaks so that you can exercise and recharge. Plan social events and make an effort to connect with fellow freelancers through networking events.

Most importantly, take advantage of your flexible schedule by travelling, attending museums and concerts, visiting with friends and doing volunteer work.
